Bringing Happy Back
Happy Joe’s has been a Quad Cities staple for decades, known for its unique blend of pizza, ice cream, and community spirit. For their 50th anniversary, I had the honor of contributing to a celebratory campaign titled Bringing Happy Back.
The goal was to honor Happy Joe’s rich history while connecting with both long-time fans and a new generation of customers. The brand needed visuals that felt nostalgic without feeling dated, capturing the playful warmth the restaurant has always been known for.
50 years of people coming together for great pizza and ice cream is how it all started. It’s grown over the years to be a staple in the Quad Cities and beyond. People love the brand, the food and countless memories have been made with Happy Joe’s.
It’s a celebration of success as well as a celebration of love for great food, familly, and friends. The 50th Celebration highlights all of the good times that have come throughout the years by adding a modern twist to some vintage elements that take some inspiration from Happy Joe’s humble beginnings.
Warm & Inviting, Just Like a Pizza Should Be
I leaned into Happy Joe’s recognizable mustard-yellow and deep red color palette, pairing it with bold nostalgic stripes to evoke a sense of familiarity and fun. The visual language created a bridge between the brand’s history and its future, sparking joy and recognition across all touch points.

Additional logo variation.

Making a small adjustment to the colors for digital spaces will allow for a more dynamic red to be present to represent the vitality Happy Joe’s brand emits. The yellow has been warmed up to a gold so that it is in line with a golden anniversary and is a modern throwback to 60’s popular color palette. It’s just nostalgic enough that it can relate to a wide audience as fresh.

Typography, like color, has the power to evoke emotion. For the anniversary campaign, I introduced a 60s-inspired typeface to bring a playful, nostalgic touch to the messaging. Its timeless character not only fit the celebratory theme but also offered flexibility for use beyond the anniversary.

Additional Brand Elements

Photography from the archives would be a great way to share all of those moments that people have enjoyed Happy Joe’s. Featuring color and black and white photography will highlight the rich history that has been made with good friends and family around a great meal.

Bringing It All Together
Bringing all the elements together—color, pattern, and typography—the 60s-inspired typeface added the final layer of nostalgia and playfulness to the campaign. It tied the visuals into a cohesive system that not only honored Happy Joe’s history but also created a timeless look that could extend beyond the anniversary celebration.

How It Went
The campaign successfully celebrated five decades of Happy Joe’s, creating a sense of community pride and reinforcing the brand’s place as a local favorite. The warm tones and retro-inspired design brought a playful yet authentic energy to the anniversary, helping the campaign feel both timeless and inviting.
